St. Judes Ranch for Children
October 2010

Five years ago one of our jewelry crafters lost her mother in a car accident! She was able to take her brother and sisters in to raise them. She has done a great job! But many children are not so fortunate. With high unemployment and a slow economy charity donations are very low.
Two months ago we donated a large amount of dream catchers to St Judes childrens home in Boulder City Nev. So they can sell them and use the profits for the children. St Judes still requires more assistance, so with your help we are donating $1 for every dream catcher we sell in the month of October. As many of you know, our dream catchers are authentic Navajo crafted, with beautiful quality and a large selection of colors and sizes for you to choose from. We ship throughout the United States, we have lowered our shipping rates to include $2.95 for 1st Class mail. You may now ship a single 2, 3 or 4 inch dream catcher for just $2.95 and help children in need. Thank you for your support. Click here ->  Shop Dream catchers.

Navajo and Hopi reservation
April 2010      Click on any underlined link anywhere on this web page to go SHOPPING at  www.BearlandersTradingCo.com

We have just returned from our spring buying trip. We were fortunate to visit the trading posts, mesas and villages located on the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni reservations. Below we show you just a couple (web page wont hold all of our pictures) of the photos we took while on our journey. What an experience, I hope any of you who enjoy the American Indian culture or the southwest, will take the time to visit the Painted desert and Navajo/Hopi reservations. While it would appear to be in the middle of nowhere, there are towns like Holbrook and Winslow only 80 miles or so in the distance. The people we met while on this trip were all very friendly and helpful.
I suggest you get a map, bring plenty of water and have fun exploring. Visit Walpi, First Mesa and Second Mesa, while on Second Mesa you may wish to stay of the Hopi Cultural Center. Wonder around and you will find many places to purchase Hopi kachina doll, moccasines and jewelry. Keep in mind the Hopi Kachinas are hung on the wall and not nailed on stands as most of the collections we see in homes today.

We have purchased a large selection of pottery, kachina dolls, sandpaintings and of course jewelry on our visit with the American Indians. We believe you will enjoy the items we have brought back for you. Please take time to shop both of our on-line stores. You may click here =>  www.BearlandersTradingCo.com and www.ArizonaIndianJewelry.com We also hope you enjoy the photos below.

We offer a large selection of Kachina dolls to choose from
February 2010

Kachina - pronounced (kuh CHEE' nah).
For centuries, different tribes have made Kachina Dolls to use in religious ceremonies. The term "Kachina" refers to a masked and costumed dancer representing various spiritual and natural aspects of life. Many kachina dolls are carved from the cottonwood root and were originally presented to the women and children of the tribe but now are made for others to enjoy as well. Kachinas are friends, guardians, or messengers to the Gods. They are believed to have supernatural powers, bestow blessings and nurture life.  All kachina impersonations are performed by males, including the figures representing female Kachinas.

Kachinas have become a part of many cultures and religions. A kachina is simply a spirit that represents animals, characterizations of people, crops, sun, earth, stars and the moon. For the Navajo People, kachina dolls mean more than just representations; they are a way of life, Navajo Tribes have adopted the tradition of crafting kachina's from the Hopi. Navajo kachina dolls have become as much of a collectible as the fine jewelry, rugs, pottery and the countless other crafts which the Navajo make. The Navajo People are well-known for their outstanding artistic talents, which seem to be present throughout a large number of Navajo families.

The Navajo kachina doll derives from Hopi and Zuni kachinas and being that all of these reservations are very close to one another, especially the Hopi and Navajo which are side by side, it seems that each Tribe has (in some way) adopted each other's traditions whether it be kachina dolls, weavings, pottery, or jewelry.

We hope to inform collectors about Navajo kachina dolls, the Navajo kachinas are about one thrid the price (retail) of the Hopi kachinas. They are very well made, authentic and beautiful, but since the Hopi originated the kachina before the Navajo, this is where we find the price difference.

Each Kachina Doll is initialed and titled by the artisan who created it. Each Kachina Doll is assembled by hand and is hand painted, and has different accessories and clothing, and there may be slight variations and different colors between the dolls pictured and those received when ordering. Some of the components (such as the skirt and shells) of these Kachina Dolls are not made by Indians.

At
BearlandersTradingCo.com we have just received a number of Navajo kachina dolls called a Shalako, which refers to a Native American Indian dance ceremony. This kachina doll is hand carved from a cottonwood root, with intricate etching and is hand painted in beautiful, vibrant colors and unique patterns. Our kachina dolls have been hand crafted by the American Indian artist T. Yazzie, well known for her intricate detailing and vibrant colors.

The Shalako dance is performed on a mesa, giving thanks to the God for abundance. The artist used the root's natural bends and curves, capturing the dancer holding its robes tightly around itself as it moves in the wind on top of the mesa. These kachina dolls are beautiful, and each doll is unique in its etching and coloring, creating a one of a kind collectable.

If you shop around you will find that we are offering our Shalako kachinas < - (click here)
at an excellant price far below most retail sites.

Veterans day special
November 2009

We wish to say "Thank you" to our veterans and all of those who serve our country. God Bless America!

November 12, 2008

I have had the great pleasure of spending time with many American Indians over the past 20 some years. It has been my experience to find most American Indians to be very proud of being first Americans. The original American Patriot. "Patriot" a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion.
Created by the original American Patriot, the American Indian, today Dream catchers transend all cultures, now representing the capacity to capture good dreams in life. Our Red,White & Blue dream catchers are a symbol of capturing the American dream!

It was recommended to me by my American Indians friends to offer red, white & blue dream catchers to the public as a way to show our Patriotism. Over the past 8 years, we have sold 18 various colors in 6 different sizes of dreamcatchers made here in America by Navajo craftsmen. The men and women of Our American armed forces have often purchased our dream catchers for themselves when going off to serve our country as well as for their family left behind in the USA.
We hope you enjoy our patriotic symbol and show of support for this great country of ours
.

 2007 -2008
We have seen and heard a large amount of publicity shown to Celebrities who adopt and support orphans around the world. But seldom do we hear of those people helping the under privileged here in America. We have spoken to many citizens in our community, only to find that adoption in the United States is more than just difficult, it is nearly impossible with all the rules and regulations imposed by our government. This problem leaves our helpless children, orphans, to suffer even more, not enough that they have lost or been removed from their biological family, but they can't seem to be relocated into another loving home.

We at Bearlanders have found a loving home that could use your support as well as ours, the home is called " St. Judes Ranch for Children". This is an orphanage located just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada; in a small town called Boulder City. If you find it in your heart to help American children in need, please contact "St. Judes". And/or find an orphanage in your town America, help our next generation! Because, believe it or not, these children will grow up, and they will move into our society, but in what capacity? I have heard the saying "The streets are paved with good intentions" please do more than just think (intend) about giving to these lost children, Give to these much deserving American children.

Horn bone has been used to craft Indian jewelry and adornments for many centuries
October 8 2006

Many of us have seen the pictures of  American Indians   wearing Horn bone chest plates. These chest plates are made of Animal horn bones, strung together with sinew and adding stones such as Turquoise or Coral, for color as well as the healing properties thought to exist in the stones. Often times the horn bones were crafted into chokers for an Indians neck or arm band.
This Indian Choker is a Bone Pipe and Leather Choker with turquoise Beads. Crafted by Indian jewelry Artist Mae S, with horn bone strung on a mini cable for strength and durability, with leather straps to tie the choker. Handcrafted Bone Pipe Chokers have been crafted generation after generation, with a look that is timeless. Turquoise is one of the main stones that the Dine' (Navajo) use in their jewelry work and in religious ceremonies. It is thought to promote healing and bring good luck.  Made of 1" bone and measuring 1 1/4" in height (from top bone to bottom bone) with a total length of 34 inches.  This Choker will comfortably fit a neck (or arm) size of 16 inches up to 24 inches. This Choker is worn by Men as well as Women.

This necklace is handcrafted and therefore, may vary slightly from the one you receive. We do our best to ensure that each item is fairly represented by the appropriate photos. This Necklace will be shipped with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Native American jewelry - The Southwest
Updated October 2006

For several years, I have had the fortunate opportunity to be a purchasing agent for Bearlanders, purchasing American Indian jewelry & gifts. I have enjoyed the Southwest for the past 49 years and I would like to bring a part of that experience to you. The American Southwest has some of the most unusual and beautiful sites in America. You will find awe in the weather-worn walls of the Grand Canyon, (Arizona) and beautiful red sandstone in Zion (Utah). Since earth’s creation, the wind and the water have carved beauty in the landscape, the likes of which no man could duplicate. Valleys so deep, you could fit the tallest skyscraper. With just about every color imaginable, blues, reds, greens, browns and purples scattered though the sides of the cliff walls. You see trees (scrub pine) growing out the side of the canyon walls, hanging on by only 1/2-inch roots. One could question how or why they exist there. There is water running through many of the canyons year round. With paths and trails to be hiked by all ages.

For a rock collector, you could fill your pockets until your pants fell down, or until your back grew so tired from the weight of the backpack filled with magnificent little treasures. No doubt the national park service doesn’t condone filling your pockets or backpack with rocks. But the west is vast and there are many little jagged treasures to be found.

The Mogillion rim is located roughly half way between Phoenix and Flagstaff and is every bit as inspiring as the Grand Canyon. Located near Strawberry (Arizona), overlooking the Mogillion, the rich, thick forest resembles a beautiful dark green carpet. Using your imagination, you can picture many places a cowboy could hide from hostile Indians. Better yet, picture the beauty of vast plateau's and deep gorge's where Indians, Soldiers and Cowboys alike, of the 1700, 1800 and early 1900's traveled and made camp. When thinking of the southwest many only picture desert and scorching heat. Not so in this beautiful high country. No doubt the temperature never reaches the low 80's. When you hear the word Arizona or American southwest, you no longer need to imagine desert, tumble weeds, snakes and unbearable heat. Now picture rich green forests, cool weather and the skies at night filled with so many stars it would take a lifetime to count them all. While watching the stars, you will still hear the howls of the coyote calling to the night sky.

For those of you who read or are familiar with Louis L'Amour and his westerns, this area of the United States allows one to feel as if he or she is the center of a L'Amour novel.

In the southwest and Arizona you will still find American Indians, not with bow and arrow in hand, but selling their handcrafted goods at road side rest stops. The American Indians have been crafting jewelry, pottery and carved items for centuries, an art that has been passed down from generation to generation. While traveling I have purchased handcrafted, Native American jewelry as gifts for my family and friends. I have been intrigued by the fact that Native American Indians have handcrafted jewelry for centuries and are still making their jewelry by hand. In the 1800's a Mexican Silversmith taught the Indians of the southwest how to use silver in their jewelry work. I realized that not everyone could visit and enjoy the Southwest or afford much of the Indian jewelry and handcrafted goods. As many know, handcrafted Indian jewelry can range in price from $2 to as much as $10,000 and more. Fortunately, I have found a wonderful source to supply beautifully handcrafted Indian jewelry from the Southwest, at very affordable prices.

American Indian jewelry is crafted with just about every gemstone imaginable, including everything from Amber, Amethyst, Jasper, Opal, Tiger Eye and of course Turquoise. Turquoise has been mined and used as far back as 5000 B.C. Turquoise jewelry is as popular today as it has been for centuries. Turquoise is said to have many healing properties, which is one of the reasons for its popularity and use in so many cultures, for so many centuries. All gemstones are said to have spiritual and medicinal healing properties. At Bearlanders Trading Co.com we carry a large selection of authentic American Indian jewelry, most of our Indian jewelry consist of the many gemstones listed in this article. America's Best kept Secret - American Indian Art
One of America's Best kept Secrets is The American Indians exceptional ability to create Art.

Updated October, 2006
The American Indian has been plagued by war and hunger for centuries. Before the Europeans came to settle in America and battle the Indians for their land, the Indians had been fighting with the Spanish Conquistador as well as with neighboring tribes. Yet, through all their turmoil, the American Indian continued to craft jewelry to adorn themselves and others.

The simplistic beauty of the jewelry created by the Indians, has changed little over the centuries. Possibly the greatest reason for the continued popularity for Indian jewelry today. One of the popular trends in jewelry this year is semi-precious gem stone jewelry. Gem stone nugget necklaces have been fashionable in the American southwest for many years, this year of course is no exception. Arizona Indian jewelry and Bearlanders Trading co have been offering gemstone jewelry to the public for the past two years, at affordable prices. This year, one of our artists has added a slight variation to the popular nugget necklaces. For those of you who may not know, Taina is one of our most prolific artists. Taina has been creating and crafting the art of her jewelry for many years. A Native American of the Navajo tribe, Taina learned the art of crafting jewelry ( called stringing ) from her mother. An art form passed down from generation to generation. We have just received the "Newest Merchandise" from Taina, Semi-precious gemstone jewelry with animal totems. A 'totem' is an animal or object which humans can most relate to, such as a bear, turtle, an arrowhead or even a stone. Totems are thought to bring spiritual and mental growth, healing and protection. We hope you will stop by and take a look at the large selection of gemstone jewelry in our collection. If you like our jewelry, please use the coupon code - btcblog - to receive $10 off any purchase of $49.99 or more. This is our way of saying "Thank you" for taking the time to read this article as well as shop our stores. This coupon is extended through-out 2006.

Bearlanders Trading Co has recently acquired another leader in the American Indian jewelry business, Arizona Indian Jewelry.com
Updated Thursday September 7, 2006
Bearlanders Trading Co has recently acquired another leading American Indian jewelry business, Arizona Indian Jewelry.com. The founders of ArizonaIndianJewelry.com split as business partners back in 2002 and have now reunited to create an exceptional Native American jewelry collection and an exciting collaboration. Mr. Michael has over 33 years experience in the retail industry and Mr. Judie has 15 years in computer sciences. The vision of both partners was to help impoverished American Indians by creating a venue to support the sales of Indian craftsmanship. As well as to establish their own business and income. The two men created Arizona Indian jewelry , an internet business directed at the sales of American Indian jewelry and Southwestern gifts. Following the business plan Mr. Michael created, Mr. Judie created a web-site promoting the sales of Native American jewelry. And the two men set out on a journey to help change a few lives for the better. "Working with some 20 individual American Indians, we have found over the years, which Indian craftsman create jewelry worth bringing to the public." States Mr.Michael. "Weather we have helped with the financial burdens of the American Indian, I have no idea. I do know that we have learned much about the American Indian way of life as well as about ourselves. Over the past 5 1/2 years we have travelled throughout Arizona, New Mexico, California and Nevada, purchased a large amount of handcrafted Indian jewelry and sold it to the public at affordable prices." With differences of opinion on how the buy, sell and present the merchandise to the public, the two parted ways. "We have stayed friends and helped each other over the years." Says Mr. Judie. "But we can't seem to get along on the business front." Mishap and good fortune has brought both businesses to ownership of Mr. Michael, with Mr. Judie's help and advise in the background. We enjoy listing the spiritual meanings associated with various gemstones. Therefore most items at Bearlanders Trading co and Arizona Indian jewelry are shipped with a spiritual meaning card and/or a certificate of authenticity. Bearlanders Trading co and Arizona Indian jewelry have both restocked their Sand Painting inventory. Sand Paintings, Once A Sacred American Indian Tradition, Now A Treasured Art!

The beauty of the Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring.
Sept 10 2006
Just back from a buying trip to Williams, Flagstaff and Winslow Arizona, we decided to stop and take a look at one of America's treasures, The Grand Canyon. Inspired and in Awe, we thought it would be a great idea to share a couple of our photos with you. If interested, the trip to the Grand Canyon by car is an easy, peaceful and scenic adventure, with deer, elk and small animals scattered throughout the countryside. No doubt, you probably won’t enjoy these pictures half as much as we do, but if given a chance, make the trip to the Grand Canyon. While looking around at the gift shops located throughout the area, we noticed a large amount of jewelry and gift items similar to those carried at Bearlanders Trading Co. If you don’t get the chance to visit the Grand Canyon, take some time to check with  Bearlanders Trading Co, where you may purchase some of the same type of merchandise as you would at the Canyon. We hope you enjoy the photos!
